Youth Dramas
- Focus on the social dilemmas faced by the main, often male, character
- Popular with teen audiences as content is relateable and is a more authentic representation of teen life compared to High School Drama.
- The character is often rebellious and or/ in conflict with other characters.
- This focuses on the difficulties of adolescent experience.
- Life as a youth is portrayed as difficult.
- Youth themselves are represented as difficult or as a problem.

High School Drama
- Became very popular in the 70's, 80's and 90's, with a lot of variations within the sub-genre.
- The socialisation of teens and young adults by institutions such as school, college and at home.
- Often celebrate the idea of being young as fun
- Mainly girl centered but may focus on a male lead.
- They tend to focus on changes, reinventions, make overs and/ or conflict with different social groups at school.
