Rough Cut 1- with feedback.(46)

From Thursdays media lesson, when we started to edit our title sequence into place. We got some feedback from Dan.

He said that he liked the visual idea of it all, but we needed to have more varied shots of close ups. He also mentioned that the transitions were good, but could do with some more work, and maybe to re-order some of the shots. We also need to start adding sounds into the title sequence.

Extension activity- Create Wix website(44)

Here's the link for one for the online website I created on Wix.com to promote our title sequence.

Hope you like it, feel free to leave comments and feedback, on ways to improve the site.

Imaani Akinsola

I edited the the website by adding more pages and text that had information about the cast and crew.

42. Photos from filming sessions

We know that the checklist says to have several individual blogs of this, but as it was done on flickr we didn't know how to convert them all into several blogs, so we just used the one, with all the photos in one. As it's the first time we used flickr as well, so you have to give us some credit for at least trying right? But nevertheless...

Here's the Link to the photos we managed to capture whiles filming and editing aspects of our film. Although its not in chronological order, we think you'd get the message.

Pictures taken by: Imaani Akinsola, Esther Djimo, Saffron Marsh-Bailey and Fatma Al-Faqeeh

PS some of the photos we're captured on our snapchats with explains the funny facial expression and text on the photos. Apart from that we hope you see that we honestly had loads of fun getting all these things done.

"Your planning is strong but make sure to post any development in detail. For example, you could talk about finding the music room as a location as this is different to your additional setting posts. Where possible, try to link these posts to your research. For example, have you seen other teen films that are based around music artists? What do the locations look like?
You should continue doing this throughout the production process and reflect on any changes that you make as you go along. You could post targets that you want to achieve in a filming session beforehand and refer back to whether you have done so afterwards.
You could make clearer on your storyboard post that this is a revised version as a result of feedback from your pitch and briefly remind the reader of this feedback.
Lastly, you should delete the ‘Technology Skills audit’ post or copy the content from your pitch as it is blank at the moment. There are also a few spelling mistakes on your Mean Girls analysis."

So from that, I went back and edited my blog on the mean girls, as well as deleting the "Technology Skills Audit" blog. As well as doing blogs of what we plan to do whiles filming and all.

"You have a reasonable number of posts but more are needed. You have analysed Blade II and Black Sails particularly well. However, you also need to look at other similar products in more detail to really help you understand the title sequences of teen films. You should additionally elaborate on the research into institutions worksheet that you have posted.
You have shown some evidence of the planning of your remake by posting your storyboard. When planning your title sequence, however, you will need to talk about this process in much more detail. You need to evaluate your remake to help you think about how you will approach making your title sequence. You have made a good effort with the presentation of your research and it could be improved by using ICT to give more variety. You also need to try to write the posts in your own words rather than copying straight from your source."

My response:
Hey,
I wanted to ask, what posts am I missing out on, because some of my posts intertwine so I thought to just leave them as they are.  As it takes so much time just to make a post in the first place. So can you please enlighten me and clarify the misunderstanding.

And in regards of the whole "not copying from the internet" Literally 90% of my work is in my own word, I don't copy directly fro the internet, I incorporate it into my work and make it in my own style.

Also, I wanted to inform you that I won't be in Monday's lesson due to an Hospital appoint pre-assessment that I have. By any chance can you forward me any work that I will be missing during that lesson so that I wont ten to fall behind.

Hope you have a good weekend and all
Thanks

Hi Esther

Sorry I've taken a while to reply to this, I've been away from college due to a bereavement.

I'm really pleased that you're being proactive in adding to your blog. The posts that I have missing for you in terms of research are:
6 - a photo of your worksheet on the 4 types of film opening. I'll send you the worksheet in case you don't have yours anymore, and you can use this prezi http://candititlesteaching.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/categorising-titles.html to answer the questions
7 - analyse the type of title sequence (e.g. titles over a moving image) and order of credits for your favourite film
12 - analyse the the order of titles from a High School drama and for a Youth Drama film (we did this in class and I'll send you the worksheet) and summarise differences and similarities
14 - analysis of the micro conventions (camera, editing, sound and mise-en-scene) of the two sub-genres. You did in class with Dan and again I'll send you the worksheet
15 - analyse the above features in a High School or Youth drama film of your choice
17 - evaluate the success of your practical remake

For planning, I imagine a lot of the stuff that's missing (e.g. the type of studio and distributor that are likely to produce your film) will be in your pitch, so you should just be able to copy that over into blog posts as a group.

Oh no I didn't think that you were copying from the Internet. What I meant in my feedback was that I'd noticed some of the posts were quite similar to the handouts in class. Its not a major thing, the reason that I mentioned it is that you learn information better the more you do with it and I thought it would be useful to you. I do agree with you, however, that in the majority of your work you present what you have found in your own way.
Thanks for letting me know about Monday. Your group were just working on your pitch so you didn't miss too much.

I hope that's helpful. I'll send you any past worksheets that I've mentioned tomorrow when I'm in college. I know its a lot of hard work, but the effort that you're putting into your blog really shows and its starting to shape up nicely.

Have a great weekend and I'll see you next week.

Thanks
Phoebe"

From This, I decided to get up to date with my blogging, and caught up just fine, I managed to get the blogs that were missing from what I was told to do. As well as start on the blogs that were due to get done. Thanks to Phoebe I got back on track.

Filming Schedule - Half Term

We are aiming to film on the 16th and 17th of February in Green Lanes North London. We will be reshooting scenes from the attack scene as the footage was at a lopsided angle which would not have been suitable to include within the title sequence. On the first week that we come back to college we also aim to book a music studio room so that we can film the main characters making music.

20/02/15

We filmed the attack scene in Green Lanes estates. It was a successful day because we managed to film the scenes in different areas and in different angles. We still have a few shots to film using the college's facilities which we will do as soon as possible. We have decided that whoever needs to film during our media lessons will go and film whilst there is somebody working on the editing of our title sequence. This will save time and will help us be as productive as possible in our current situation.

Summary of similarities and differences between high school drama and youth drama title sequences:

The main difference between high school dramas and youth dramas is that high school dramas tend to just have one main production company e.g. Walt Disney and Paramount. This is because they are successful production companies and are able to afford the expenses of a film. However youth drama films are more independent so they need various institutes to help fund for and produce their film. As high school dramas are associated with a mainstream company, it gives their film prestige and makes it become more well-known. In high school dramas, the narrative of the film is more narrative therefore it gives a clear idea of what the film is going to be about. On the other hand, the narrative of youth drama films are more discrete and stylised so it makes it more difficult for the audience to know what is going to happen next.

What are sub-genres of Teen Drama films?

The term genre means 'category' or 'type' and is useful when discussing film because it helps to group or organise different films according to what they are about and what they look like. This helps producers make and market their film to audiences, and it helps audiences make decisions about what films they like and want to see. With these films, common plots and storylines, characters, settings and locations are reference to contemporary popular culture, and these became established as the codes and conventions of this genre.

Teen Films can be split into two different sub-genres:

  • Youth Drama
  • High School Drama
Youth Drama

Youth dramas focus on the social dilemmas faced by the main, often male, character. It is often popular with teen audiences and are seen to be a more authentic representation of youth than HSD. The character is often rebellious and/or in conflict with others. This focuses on the difficulties of adolescent experience and portrays youth as difficult or a problem.

High School Drama

High school dramas became very popular in the 1970's, 80's and 90's, with lots of variations within the sub-genre. The socialization of teens and young adults by institutions such as school, college and at home  often celebrate the idea of being young or youth as fun. The girl is often centred but it generally focuses on a male lead. They tend to focus on changes, make-overs and/or conflict within different groups at school.

Good blogging and excellent planning posts. You and your group are working well. More and consistent blogging is needed especially as it's for now mainly group posts. You have completed 7 since the last health check and should have completed around 10-15 more. Make sure all posts (group and individual) are detailed and meaningful.

Improvements
- Production schedule link to Timetoast is not live.
- Embed Prezis, Timetoast etc rather than (or as well as) posting links.
- Can you come up with a better way of presenting the storyboard? As I said in health check 1, really think about the presentation of your blog
- Lots of images should be presented in a slideshow
- Institutional detail - why did you select those companies for your films, what research did you do into them? Why have you identified your target audience? Again, What research did you do? Think back to what we covered in class.
- Don't leave empty posts with title but no content - complete or delete.

Plan for 4th of Feb filming

We hope that by the end of filming on that day, we have finished the attack scene, as well as getting most of the studio scene done. Overall, we hope that Thursday is just as productive as today. Because when its productive, we have a blast and our work is amazing. We've noticed that we work well together as a team, as well as getting in our own individual input listened to. What we've noticed is that, as we film, we get really creative, as we improvise shots as we go along as well as sticking to our initial plan.

Filming schedule//Location updates/Reflecting of filming(43)

26th of January.
The first day of filming, we've discovered the music room, that has a studio in our college, which we have assess to(with permission of course). So ,we have managed to get into the room and do some filming in there. It was really fun and cool to actually try out the equipment in there, as well as appreciating that we are allow to use that room. We shot a scene of the character "Samantha" walking towards the studio(this is the scene where she's about to have a meeting with the mentor). This was done by the camera being hand-held. Baring in mind that it would probably make our title sequence seem a bit amateur like  We then improvised and decided to take a shot of her actually footsteps, as we though it will add to the anticipation of what's to await(as she's not sure as to why she's been sent to this room). We also improvised and took a shot of her walking from her point of view, to give insight of what the character can see, as well as adding to the anticipation. We also took a medium wide shot of Samantha walking into the room opening the door, using the match-cut technique to show her going from outside the room, to inside the room. After that, we stopped filming, as we didn't have any more time, as well as the fact that we didn't have costume to really go on to do more.

29th of January.
We tried to get the scene of the last shot of our film, but at this point was unsuccessful. This was down to the fact that we had to rearrange our plan in terms of getting this shot. As we was left to try and find a suitable stage-like room. We did manage to ask around the drama department to see if they could somehow let us use the drama rooms or assembly hall. But that wasn't able to work, as its a very busy time of the year for that department, as it's getting closer and closer to exams, so it's non-stop rehearsals. However, they did say that, if and when its free, we will be allow to use it, and to keep them informed if we still need the room. So hopefully by the end of this week, we can hopefully get this scene done.

31st of January.
We aimed to film in green lanes and Finsbury Park. But it wasn't exactly the most of productive days, as there was issues with the weather, as well as the bad knew of the death of our friend(which was on the news). Causing issues with the qualify for work we got done, as well as us not being able to focus. However, we managed to get one shot of the character "Jasmine" which was a reaction shot in relation to the attack of the main character, even that was hard to do in the rain, baring in mind we have to keep the equipment dry and our own well-being because of the slippery mud etc.

1st February.
We managed to get the shot of the character "Samantha" where she's in her home, getting ready to leave leave her house. It was quite successful but will probably need to be re-shot just to be on the save side. However, its not bad, so once we get all the footage done, we might choose to use it, or to redo it.

2nd of February.
We managed to get a lot of shots done. It was a very productive day. We're honestly surprised as to how much we got done. Considering it was cold and all. But it was worth it.The shots we managed to get are consisting of the characters "Jasmine/Monique/Samantha" and the build up of the attack. As well as we taking the shot of Monique reaction shot that we took during the weekend. Because of this, we have changed the location of our film from Finsbury Park, to the local park near to our college, as its easier for us to get there between lessons and its a good alternative. It has a lot of greenery and its pretty much a smaller version of Finsbury Park.

20st of February.
This was during the half term break, on a Friday, we came together to re-film all of the outside shots of our title sequence. Because of how we noticed that all our shots were tilted and there was no way of rotating or fixing it. So we pretty much were back to stage one. However, because of that step back. We managed to get so much done. We spent about 2 hours(12pm-2ish pm) filming. Managing to re-shoot the attack scene, as well as improvising shots that we could use to put into out sequence as fillers, to take up some space. Surprisingly, we also managed to get accurate shots, none of them turned out tilted. So all in all it was a productive day for us. Considering the issues with Esther's condition after having an operation the week before. This is the day, we decided to change locations once again, to one of the estates in Haringey Green Lanes. To make our title sequence come across as realistic and "hood" like. As you have the little park, the flats and buildings, the greenery etc.

22nd of February.
We initially planned to film that day, but it wasn't needed, because of what we managed to film on the Friday before. So therefore we cancelled the filming session. But if we were to film on that day, it would have been back in the Haringey Green Lanes Estate, just to get more improvised shots that we could may be use in our title sequence.
