8 - What is Genre

Film genre,  generally means a specific style or subject matter. While a movie may have elements of a number of different genres, it is often classified under a single genre for reference purposes. film genres include drama, romantic comedy, action/adventure, musical and experimental. A film's inclusion in a recognized genre gives potential viewers some general hints about its subject matter and suitability

15 - Analyse of Teen Drama

Teen Dramas - The Breakfast Club

Teen dramas are mainly set in schools, which is where Princess diaries is partly set . The title sequence
starts with a sound track as we have a birds eye view as to where the film is set . we hear police sirens as it accompanies a limo . we then sees the main girl wearing her school uniform as it is partly set in a high school . The sound track changes as she is going down stairs , and as she is doing  so we have a looking up shot with pans down as the main girl is going down the fire pole . the sound track stops when the characters are talking . we see the main girl on her way to school , giving us a clip of what she will do on a regular school day as perfectly timed, she meets up with her friend on the way.

16/17) Practical remake activity. The Breakfast Club.

You will have to tilt you head in order to see this in the right angle.

First of all we would like to show you our storyboard prior to us actually remaking the clip.

Here's our remake footage of The Breakfast Club. Done by Group 5
We hope that you enjoy this

Our successes.
We managed to get al our shots done during the given time of three hours.
We tried to use different ranges of shots, to add effect to the clip.
We tried to be as creativity as possible in terms of getting the scene of the car and conversation, with we could describe as a success, as we managed to be creative and use what we had already.
We successful used garageband to create the loops we used as our backing track playing whiles the action was taking place, in order for the clip to not be boring or dull.
We managed to incorporate the elements that were also in the original film, that being the college newspaper(The Toast) and the institution shot of the building of the college, as well as the car scene and conversation. Trying to get down word for word, the conversation that was exchanged between student and parent.

- 15 - Title Sequence for Grease and Mean Girls

Grease

The title sequence starts with an editing of an montage beach sequence, in this shot we can hear the crashing of waves and dialogue of what the main people are saying, this is done on a long shot of them walking down the beach wearing the regular 1950s outfits .we also see an over the shoulder shot while on the beach as the two main characters talk to one another.
The next part of the title sequence shows an animated sequence which has a sound track over it, it then goes to a shot of the high school where we can hear the chattering of the students and we see more of the iconic 1950s clothing like the designed leather jackets for the main group of boys and the pink jackets for the girls, we also see the main girl wearing modest and innocent clothing completely different to the people she is hanging around with.

Mean Girls
The title sequence stats with a sound track as the parents start talking to the main girl as she is sitting down , as the girl stands up we see a over the shoulder shot as well as multiple mid shots . . the sound track changes as the voice over starts , during this we see videos and pictures of back when she was living in Africa . We then see her going to her first day of school , this is when the story line starts, there is still a voice over of her speaking as she is explaining what is happening on her first day e.g. doesn't understand why she was always getting in trouble for eating in class and leaving the room to go to the toilet without permission . The clothes that are worn are set in the modern times so now and of people of that age e.g. jeans and t.shirts .

-13 - Genre and Sub Genre

Genre and Sub-Genre

The term genre means category or type and is useful when discussing film because it helps to group or organize different films according to what they are about and what they look like. This helps producers make and market their film to audiences, and it helps audiences make decisions about what films they like and want to see.

A theorist called Altman says that we can talk about film genre in two ways
Semantic which is the way the film looks
Syntactic which is the stories that film tells.

The use of similar features in films of the same genre is called codes and conventions. That help us to quickly recognize the type of film we are watching, to have some expectations about what we could see and what might happen and we will often enjoy watching how the film might use of challenge the codes of the genre
However, genres are constantly evolving in order to keep films interesting and new for audiences and so the conventions of each genre cab change over time

The code and convention of teen films. With these films, common plots and storyline, characters, settings and locations and reference to contemporary popular culture (especially music and fashion) became established as the codes and conventions of the genre.

The main code of teen films is seen to the concept of coming of age in some way. It also includes the following conventions
Adolescent characters
High school, homes and or streets
Peer groups and friends
Teacher and or parents
Popular music
