Backing track ideas. (Sounds) PLANNING

I thought it would be a good idea to use some urban songs, that match the formation of the title sequence. As one of the code and conventions of youth dramas, is to have current culture, so I took that in terms of getting backing tracks that are in the current cutlure, as well as representing our story effectively, as the lyrics match the situation. So here's some of the backing tracks that may work well together with the title sequence.

Krept and Konan- My story
https://soundcloud.com/thomas-lcfc-coney/krept-and-konan-my-story
This could be playing at the start of the sequence, as it has sounds of an attack and that that be used to anticipate the attack of Samantha. Whiles the camera is zoomed onto her face, it can go to the lyric where it says "This is my story.."

Krept and Konan- Nightmares
https://soundcloud.com/mohammed-khadar/young-kingz-krept-and-konan
This could be used while Samantha is rolling around on the ground in pain. As it has sounds of a heartbeat. Startign when the lyrics says "Just another piece of my story, through the pain and the guts and the glory..." // "Tryna do it big but the chances are slim" // "Deeper in the city where the streets have no pitty aye"

Krept and Konan- The other side
https://soundcloud.com/maestrothebakerboy/krept-and-konan-the-other-side-feat-ari-young-kingz-2013
"Flame drops are falling fro mthe sky, nowhere go, nowehre to hide, forever don't exist when it coems to life, you'll never know when it's tiem to go, to the other side.."

Krept and Konan- Brothers
https://soundcloud.com/mohammed-khadar/young-kingz-krept-and-konan-1
I think this will work well, with the ending scens of the title equence, when the group is on the stage, whiels the camera goes fro mthe feet to their faces, the liyrics kidn of represent that whole atmosphere.
"When the movie's finished, the credits run, when the lights turn on and the song is done and when memoires fade, and as time moves on.."
As the credits come back in, it could fade out, as his the song is coming from a distance.

Yungen ft Sneakbo- Ain't on nothing(part 2)- Stormzy, Bashy, Benny Banks, Castastic, Angel
https://soundcloud.com/fromtheartmusic/yungen-ft-sneakbo-aint-on-nuttin-remix-pt-2-stormzy-bashy-benny-banks-cashtastic-more
This could be used when Samantha has her shot when she's putting her shoes on and is aboutto leave the house. As she has headphones on, we could try get it to seem as  though the sound is coming from the headphone.

Analyse a teen drama.(15)

Mean Girl.
This teen drama is set in a school. Which explores the various elements of the coming of age. In terms of the social all group divisions. (The nerds/preps/jocks/goths ect)
It is female orientated. So yes the main character(s) are females. It is about a teenage girl that is finally going to be in a public school, after years of being home schooled. And the challenges she faces. With other girls; Trying to fit into a crowd of people; Trying to keep and maintain friends, whiles tackling males for the first time(hormones). Meanwhile trying to stay above her work.
It shows insight of her family life, as well as her relationship(s) with everyone around her. It shows us the transformation, of a innocent girl, into a up right b*tch, then realising that, that isn't the type of girl she wants to portrayed as.

This film keeps all the codes and conventions of a teen drama throughout, rather than challenging it.

The title sequence starts off with the "Paramount Movies" and gets straight into the story. There's a backing track, that kind of gives the impression of the tempo of the film, at first, but it does change. As you go through the sequence, you get credits of the character(s). The title sequence is pretty much narrated from the start, which is the voice over of the main character through out, but there are bits and bobs with the other characters speaking  over the backing track.

Here's the trailer of the film

Sub-genre Convention(13)

Analyse the order of Title sequences(12)

It's clear to see that they do differ. And that could be on more than just one way then just the sub genres.
For instance, Depending of if you're a mainstream or a independent film, that can influence what type of title sequence you produce. Simply because money plays a huge role in film production. In short it means that, the more money you have, the more credits you will have in your title sequence. Which is evident in the images above.

Furthermore, depending on its sub genre, it does influence what is in the title sequence. In terms of what it will actually show. High school dramas generally have more credits in the title sequence, whereas, teen dramas lack that.

Sub-genre convention(14)

4 types of title sequences(6)

Here are 4 types of title sequences.

One being Titles superimposed on a blank screen.
Which means in other words, when text(credits) appear on a blank screen). As it's one of the first types of title sequences developed, its historically become very common and still in use up till today. So it hasn't lost its touch. Meanwhile, the text face is always in contrast to the black background. Interestingly, this type of title sequence was originally used for those that had low budget. All in all, offering a simplistic way on giving institutional information prior to the beginning of a film.

Then you have other title sequences like:

Titles with moving images
Here's an example of one
.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) — Art of the Title

Titles with built in animation
There's an example of one

Juno (2007) — Art of the Title

Titles that are sub categories of all of these elements.
There's an example of one

Se7en (1995) — Art of the Title

As the title sequence begins, you see a bit of action, but that is shortly lived. As its only for a few seconds where you see a man and woman armed with guns and there's shooting going on. Then its blank, where your attention is captivated by the credits appearing on the screen.  The credits are presented with 'Pump it' by Black Eyed Peas, all the wise being fast and attentive. Giving the impression that this film as more to offer.  They keep the font simplistic (yellow and white) Whiles being shown on a black screen. But nevertheless, its effective as the text colour stands out, making it look appealing to the eye. And you cant' exactly go wrong with the colour yellow.

Titanic
In this title sequence, there's a bunch of text over lapping the moving images. This is a prime example of a narrative sequence as well. Meanwhile having mellow music, to empathise the tragic events that are going to happen. Which could cause an impression to the audience, indicating that this will be a emotional film.

What is a Title Sequence? (3)

A title sequence is everything that appears before the film actually starts. It's like a story before the actual story.
Making it key aspects of a film, as it influences the atmosphere/feel you get from the film prior to actually watching it.
They tend to show the audience, characters that are going to be in the film, as well as the location, on historical period(time) of the film set.
Generally gives you information on the crew involved in the production.
In regards to characters. It give us insight to the main ones. Or significances their importance. Which in a sense kind of promotes a actor/actress in hopefully making a leading debut in the future. Meanwhile offering, a taste of what to expect later in that film.

Pitch feedback.(39/40)

After our pitch, we received feedback from Dan, in ways we can improve our title sequence.

First on all we were told that our pitch was highly informative. As we pretty much covered everything needed for the pitch. But we have to fully establish our storyboard. As it had too much characters. We had 4 characters in the title sequence.
When it could only be based on one in particular, that would make things so much easier for us. As we will not need to use loads of shot, as well as it helping us save more time with actually filming. Therefore, we need to alter our storyboard once more, to finalise things. And get started. Furthermore, it will give us more time to do editing everything together.

We've decided that we will go with the second storyboard. However, instead of having all three characters being shown with insight. We will only have one character being highlighted. That being the character Jasmine. Meaning that we will effectively cut down our filming time, making things 10 times easier for us. As it will give up more time in terms of when we're filming, to get the perfect shots we want. As will as giving us longer editing time, to give our title sequence that professional look.

Not Another Teen Movie

The scene begins with a long shot of the school building to show the surroundings, and introduce the high school to emphasise the genre of the 'high school drama'. There is a pan shot before introducing the teacher speaking, and a zoom in of trainers to show the school's trends and what is popular in season. There are legs walking at a close up, as it focuses solely on the legs it could signify that the character is walking somewhere important.
The mise en scene is clearly reflective of a typical high school drama. In the title sequence it shows the separation of different social groups including the jocks, the cheerleaders in their classic cheerleading outfits, the nerds, the pretty girls (usually three friends dressed in pink) and many more. It has a contrast between a social rebel whose dad owns a scrubby, broken car which clearly doesn't fit into the norms of society as it is juxtaposed with a nice, clean car who belongs to the 'cool kid' of the school who everyone loves and looks up to. He has a reserved parking space and photos of himself hanged around the school which shows that he is well-liked and respected by everyone on the school grounds. There is also a clip of school boys desperately trying to fit into societies norms as they are trying to get a girlfriend, which is what gives you a status in a conventional high school.
There is not that much focus on sound as the clip mainly focuses on the visual images of the high school, however the music playing in the background is the 'Not Another Teen Movie' soundtrack and you hear non-diegetic sound of the conversations between friends in school.
The film is edited to exaggerate certain actions, for example when the female cheerleader gets hit by a car, it is edited to make it look as if she did a summersault and a front flip in the air, this offers a sense of humour as the film is aimed to make the audience laugh.

LA HAINE

The clip begins introducing the main character Said, through the use of a slow zoom into his face. There is a low angle shot of Said and a two shot of him and Vinz on the bed. In the two shot the camera is facing towards Said showing Vinz's perspective, and Said's facial expressions as a reaction to their conversation. There is a close up of the two of them in the shot however Vinz is in the foreground and Said is in the background. As a part of the mise en scene, we are introduced to Vinz through visual representation as he is wearing a ring which has his name carved into it. It is set on an estate to show the living conditions and the overall surroundings of the setting. There are police characters in uniform to suggest that it is a troublesome neighbourhood therefore police are constantly guarding the area. Said is wearing a tracksuit and chain to suggest that he is informal and to show his everyday wear, making the clip realistic and come to life. The clips shows diegetic sound of an explosion, indicating that there will be violent disputes and disagreements in the rest of the film, this creates tension and apprehension in the audience as they will be anxious as to what happens next. The song that is playing in the background is by Bob Marley called 'Burning and Looting', this song fits in nicely to the theme of the film because the film is about looting. In the background we hear dogs barking and an overall ambient noise of an estate. In the editing process there is a montage of a news footage, this is done to display a lot of information in a short space of time, and implies that the setting is energetic and chaotic to highlight the mood of the scene.

17.) Practical remake activity - 'Breakfast Club'

Evaluate the practical remake - include image and screen grabs

29- Sound design

IMAANI

This is a list of the Foley sound that we plan on adding to the title sequence.

DOOR SLAM

A door slam is a sound that we aim to use during every black out. This will create tension as the sound is loud and often associated with horror movies.

POLICE SIREN

We aim on using police sirens to indicate to the audience that a crime has taken place when we display the attack scene.

FOOT STEPS

We aim to use footsteps to show that somebody is being followed or to indicate to the audience that something bad may happen. This will also build tension.

GIRLS SCREAMING

To create tension. To be synced with the characters screams (the character that will be attacked)

Planning mise-en-scene : location, settings and props

Some Girls inspiration
We decided to take some elements of Some girls, as first of all we are a group full of girls, so we had to use what we got, which isn't ideal but will have to do.  As some of the bits of film will reflect some girls in a way or another. This is also where we got the approach of showing our characters in the way that we will show them. Here's a link to some girls http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p010rjqc

FILM IDEA

KEY PROPS
  • Microphone
  • Phones
  • Knife

LOCATIONS
  • Green lanes estate
  • Finsbury Park

SETTING
  • Estate( Somewhere that will appeal to our audience, as generally speaking they ill be teenagers from London and it's something that will engage them in and somethng they can relate to as well)
  • Recording Studio(Will be shown when the group are producing material)
  • Outdoors(streets) (when the stabbing takes place and the coming together of the group)

  •  Outide the School / Shops (some of the scenes will be here)

COSTUME

Male characters

One of the male characters will have a stereotypical street and urban look and the other will have an urban style that is a bit more smart to add contrast. This will give the audience an idea of where the characters come from and how they behave. Ideally, this will be suited for the character Tyrone, as he is a representation of a typical black ethnic young adult, being raised in London, around gangs, violence, conflict with police, being labelled and judged/discriminated based on how he dresses, leading him to end up being involved with drugs and all sorts of violence, meanwhile having dreams of "making it out of the hood", he has a clear idea that there's "more to the hood" and that the dream "isn't to stay in the hood, is to make it out and bring more to the table and community". Yet everything around him seems to challenge that or blind side him.

Female Characters

The female characters will have a casual costume that will relate to their personalities and job. Obviously, each individual will have their own style, which will be noticeable. But we will bare in mind the social division between the mentor and the teenage girls.

LIGHTING

  • Natural lighting outside
  • Indoor lighting for filming in the room
  • Spot lights will also be used
