What are sub-genres of Teen Drama films?

The term genre means 'category' or 'type' and is useful when discussing film because it helps to group or organise different films according to what they are about and what they look like. This helps producers make and market their film to audiences, and it helps audiences make decisions about what films they like and want to see. With these films, common plots and storylines, characters, settings and locations are reference to contemporary popular culture, and these became established as the codes and conventions of this genre.

Teen Films can be split into two different sub-genres:

  • Youth Drama
  • High School Drama
Youth Drama

Youth dramas focus on the social dilemmas faced by the main, often male, character. It is often popular with teen audiences and are seen to be a more authentic representation of youth than HSD. The character is often rebellious and/or in conflict with others. This focuses on the difficulties of adolescent experience and portrays youth as difficult or a problem.

High School Drama

High school dramas became very popular in the 1970's, 80's and 90's, with lots of variations within the sub-genre. The socialization of teens and young adults by institutions such as school, college and at home  often celebrate the idea of being young or youth as fun. The girl is often centred but it generally focuses on a male lead. They tend to focus on changes, make-overs and/or conflict within different groups at school.
