What is genre?

Film genre refers to 'category' or 'type' and is useful when discussing film, because it helps distinguish films according to what they are about and what they look like. This allows producers to make and market their film to audiences, and also allows audiences to make decisions about what films they would like to see. Audiences find genres satisfying because it helps them develop an understanding of the certain expectations that may be fulfilled, and they may find pleasure in predicting what will happen next.

High School Drama

High school dramas became very popular in the 1970's, 80's and 90's with lots of variation within the sub-genre. The socialisation of teens and young adults by institutions such as school, colleges and at home. They often celebrate the idea of being young or youth as fun however this is not always the case. The girl is often 'centred' but it may focus on a male lead. They tend to focus on changes, make-overs or conflict within different groups at school.
